Stock Indices

Stock Index investment pertains to allocating funds in portfolios that track the performance of a stock index, which is a collection of stocks representing a segment of the stock market, such as a specific sector, market, or region. Examples include:

  • the S&P 500, which aggregates the performance of 500 large companies in the U.S.
  •  the Nikkei 225, representing top companies in Japan.

Traditionally, investors gained exposure to these indices through mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that mimic the index’s composition.
More recently, investment avenues have broadened to include derivative products like index futures and options, and structured products, offering various risk-return profiles and strategies, with their value directly tied to the underlying index’s performance.

Stock Index investments are characterized by their:

  • Broad Market Snapshot: Captures a segment’s overall performance.
  • Risk Spread: Diversifies across many stocks.
  • Performance Gauge: Acts as a market benchmark.
  • High Liquidity: Easy trading through ETFs and derivatives.
  • Wide Access: Available via funds and derivatives.
